From Unplanned.
As a junior in college, Abby Johnson (Ashley Bratcher) decided to become a volunteer at her local Planned Parenthood clinic to encourage women about preventative measures offered by the company. Even though she says she is pro-life, over the next eight years Abby’s dedication to her job and providing the best clinic to provide services propels her up through the ranks from volunteer all the way to clinic director and even Planned Parenthood employee of the year. Because of her faith, she had an understanding and even a general friendship with the leaders (Jared Lotz and Emma Elle Roberts) of the pro-life group that stand outside the clinic fence to pray and speak with patients every day. While her husband Doug (Brooks Ryan) and parents (Robert Thomason and Robin DeMarco) disapproved with her career choice, Abby is adamant that her work is providing necessary help for women in the middle of crisis pregnancies. However, shortly after receiving her employee of the year award, she was reprimanded for questioning her supervisor (Robia Scott) about the doubled abortion goals set forth by the national office. One Saturday when the clinic is short-staffed, Abby is called into a procedure room to operate the ultrasound machine so the surgeon can see what he’s doing. When Abby witnesses the internal aspect of the abortion procedure on the ultrasound monitor instantly changes everything about how she feels and what she believes about her job.
Based on the true story of Abby Johnson the story is moving and captivating from the opening scene until the credits roll. While the movie is intense during a handful of scenes, the content is definitely not worthy of its R-rting. For an independent movie, the acting is solid, the script is believable, and the movie is overall very well-paced. Due to the subject material, it’s not a movie for young children, but the message and not-often discussed information contained in Unplanned provides a thought-provoking experience that makes it a must-see regardless of what side of the issue the viewer is on.
