“For choosing to live.”

From Breathe.

Shortly after Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) married the love of his life, Diana (Claire Foy), he contracts polio and becomes paralyzed from the neck down.  The lives of Cavendish family are changed in an instant from living abroad and preparing for the coming birth of their son to fighting this death sentence of a diagnosis.  After several months in the hospital, Robin loses the will to live and in a desperate attempt to improve his attitude and health, Diana brings Robin home to live.  With the help of her brothers (both played by Tom Hollander) and their friends, Diana takes care of Robin in unprecedented ways of regards to polio care.  Despite the great risk of Robin’s dependency on electricity, he begins to thrive again as an individual, a husband, and father; he is able to enjoy life both in his room and through the window, but an idea gives him the opportunity to experience life in a way no ever thought possible.  With the help of an inventor friend, Teddy (Hugh Bonneville), Robin is able to leave the house with a battery-powered respirator mounted on a wheelchair.  This simple idea opens the door for a whole new type of living for Robin and Diana even though the challenges of their lives are far from over, but Diana is there for her husband every step of the way with love and support, making the impossible possible.

This movie is so successful for two reasons: Garfield and Foy.  The two actors are young, but carry the immense weight of their roles, both when acting alone and together.  The serious moments are tempered well through witty dialog and humorous “breathers” that keep the story from being emotionally overloading.  The last 20-or-so minutes of the movie take on a different, darker theme than the rest of the movie and will be disappointing to some viewers, but it follows the real events of Cavendish’s life.  Overall, this movie is inspiring and heart-warming, beautifully developed on every level of production to share this amazing story.
