“Oh… it’s hot!”

From Isn’t It Romantic.

Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is an architect in New York City who lives her life boring and dateless life alone except for her standoffish neighbor Donny (Brandon Scott Jones), her assistant Whitney (Betty Gilpin), and friend from work, Josh (Adam Devine).  She often spends her days wishing that some guy would notice her for more than just their coffee order and when a new client Blake (Liam Hemsworth) sends her out of a meeting, her day seems like an all-time low until she’s mugged on the way home.  Natalie wakes up in a hospital, surrounded by flowers, happy couples, and choreographed dancing.  Realizing that she’s become trapped in a romantic comedy where Blake is in love with her, her apartment and wardrobe are brand-new, Donny has become the cliché gay friend, Whitney has become her rival; the only one untouched in this parallel universe is Josh who still treats her with the same kindness as always.  That changes when he saves the the life of Isabella (Priyanka Chopra) who falls head-over-heels for Josh, and Natalie realizes that she’s been trying to get the wrong guy to fall in love with her the whole time.  As time runs out for Natalie to tell Josh how she really feels, she also keeps trying to create plans for a big meeting at work that are fun, practical, attractive, and unique just like her.

The strength of this movie is that it’s not afraid to use all of the standard aspects of romantic comedies as an open, honest, and slightly satirical look at what makes the rom-com genre both ridiculous and captivating.  Wilson and Devine lead with the hilarious attitude that fans know and love which combines well with the big cast, interesting storyline, and abundance of fourth-wall breaks.  While it won’t win any awards, Isn’t it Romantic uses the elements that everyone loves to hate to create a sweet and funny movie perfect for relaxed, zone-out viewing.
