“My job.”

From Cold Pursuit.

When snow plow driver from the small town of Keyhoe, Nels (Liam Neeson) and his wife (Laura Dern) are informed that their son Kyle (Micheál Richardson) died of a drug overdose in Denver, Nels has his suspicions because his son was not at an addict. When a coworker of Kyle’s shows up apologizing and claiming responsibility for Kyle’s death because he stole drugs from a local dealer, Nels tracks down the dealer and kills him and he then begins working his way up the ladder to the mysterious boss: Viking (Tom Bateman). While managing a small army of bodyguards/goons, the Viking also manages to share custody of his son Ryan (Nicholas Holmes) with his ex-wife (Julia Jones) while he manages his Denver-area drug empire. As Nels continues to work his way through Viking’s organization, Viking believes that the Native American drug dealer White Bull (Tom Jackson) is responsible and decides to send a message and break a decades-old agreement between the dealers, instantly pushing the two into a bloody turf war. As the number of remaining dealers begins to dwindle and Viking remains difficult to find, Nels turns to his his ex-criminal brother (William Forsythe); with his brother’s help, Nels discovers both the Viking’s name and that he has a son. Nels decides to use Ryan as bait to get a face-to-face meeting with Viking so he can finally complete his revenge on the men that killed his innocent son.

This darkly funny action film that is strongly reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s movies. Neeson leads in a role that is different from his normal roles, but it still works. With the exception of one small part, the heavy gore is mainly offscreen, but this does not mean there’s an absence of blood. Cold Pursuit is an oddly captivating movie that viewers will be surprised to enjoy.
