From The Kid Who Would Be King.
Centuries after the legendary King Arthur vanquished his sorceress half sister Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson), England has again falling into turmoil as mankind no longer strives for the greater good, but only for personal gain. Young Alexander (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) is the last person that anyone would expect to be a leader as he and his best friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo) are constantly bullied by Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris), but when Alexander pulls a sword out of a concrete slab in an abandoned construction site his life is forever changed. Merlin (Patrick Stewart) senses that the sword has been found by the next true king, so he takes on a teenage form (Angus Imrie) and arrives to train Alex for the fight of his life. In four days, there will be a solar eclipse at which point Morgana and her army of zombie soldiers will be strong enough to break out of there prison, and each night until then when the sun goes down all mortals disappear leaving Alexander and those he knights to battle with undead soldiers that escape in search of the sword. With practically no training and time quickly running out, Alex is left with no choice but to find more knights to help him on his quest; his only options are Bedders, Lance, and Kaye. With dangers arising on all sides, Merlin, Alexander, and his reluctant knights will have to try and find a way to form a united front against the darkness that threatens to destroy their world.
This modern retelling of the Sword in the Stone is a surprisingly captivating movie. Solid special effects, lots of comic relief helps create a story that manages to walk the line between too-scary-for-kids and too-boring-for-adults. it’s a family adventure that will keep viewers on the edge of their seat. Serkis takes his lead role in stride creating a hero that everyone can relate to. The violent-but-not-gory action sequences combined with Ferguson’s chilling villain comes together to turn The Kid Who Would Be King into a fun adventure that all but the very young will be pleasantly surprised to enjoy.
