From The Upside.
Now that Dell (Kevin Hart) is out of prison, he needs to find a job or his parole will be revoked and he’ll be sent back to jail. Unenthusiastic about his job search, he goes out in search of three signatures to prove that he’s actively looking for work when his third signature-search mistakenly lands him in a penthouse apartment where he meets the quadraplegic Phillip (Bryan Cranston). After firing his last auxiliary assistant, Phillip and the executive of his estate Yvonne (Nicole Kidman) are interviewing dozens highly qualified applicants, but none interest Phillip as much as the rude and fast talking Dell. Paralyzed after a sporting accident, Phillip is bitter and disconnected from his life and friends despite his enormous wealth and successes. After years of constantly disappointing his son (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) and his ex (Aja Naomi King), Dell is thrilled to have such a high-paying job with all kinds of access so that he can work at repaying child support and connecting with his son. Despite his great lack of training in the medical field, Dell works with Yvonne, the physical therapist (Golshifteh Farahani), and the other staff to take care of Phillip physically while he easily connects with Phillip on a personal level and encourages him to enjoy living again. While Yvonne carefully watches to make sure that Dell doesn’t harm Phillip, Dell begins to transform the home and everyone there with his street smarts and says-what-he-thinks attitude. Through the many ups and downs of personal healthcare, Dell and Phillip begin to develop a friendship that no one would’ve expected and that could change both their lives forever.
Based on a true story, this hilarious and heartwarming movie is full of laughs from start to finish, but it still manages to tell an inspiring story. Hart and Cranston deliver smart performances as the polar opposite leads. One of Hart’s cleaner comedies, The Upside is a funny, but definitely moving story that celebrates the friendships that shape our lives.
