“Boy, who sent this?”

From Holmes & Watson.

Because he was teased relentlessly as a child, Sherlock Holmes (Will Ferrell) vowed to shut out emotion and instead dedicated his entire life and will power to knowledge and intellect. While this led to his fame and success in England, his many eccentricities have led to a nation full of adoring fans with none greater than Dr. John Watson (John C. Reilly). While sharing his home with roommate John and maid, Mrs. Hudson (Kelly Macdonald), Sherlock easily solves crimes and his only source of conflict comes from his nemesis, Professor Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes) and Police Inspector Lestrade (Rob Brydon) who is doubtful of everyone’s quick acceptance of Sherlock’s “findings.” When Sherlock discovers clues that Moriarty is fleeing London for America, all seems normal until a body and note claims that Moriarty is going to kill the Queen of England (Pam Ferris) in a few days unless Sherlock can stop him. At the body’s autopsy, Sherlock and John meet an American Doctor, Grace (Rebecca Hall), and a subject from one of her studies, Millicent (Lauren Lapkus). Even against Lestrade’s constant nagging and sure that Moriarty has left the country, Sherlock is left struggling to identify the copycat murder. John, who desperately seeks to be co-detective, pushes Sherlock to give him a chance, but the closer the deadline gets for the Queen’s murder, the more muddled the clues and their friendship becomes.

This unique buddy-comedy for Ferrell and Reilly is rare in its not-R rating, opening the door to a wider audience, but unfortunately it doesn’t connect with existing fans and reminds other viewers why they do not like the Ferrell/Reilly brand of comedy. A fun take on the Sherlock Holmes stories, the movie does bring new comical twists, but the movie’s real issue are the modern jokes that are blended into the dialog. If viewers want a some laughs mixed with some mystery, Holmes & Watson is the perfect choice.
