From The Man Who Invented Christmas.
After his brilliant writing of Oliver Twist, the world considered Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) a successful author, but Charles is struggling greatly in every area of his life; his last few books have flopped, bills are piling up, and he is stuck in writer’s block. Dickens is desperate to keep up his image both at home with his wife (Morfydd Clark) and children and in the high society that he desperately clings to. The visit of his parents (Jonathan Pryce and Ger Ryan) brings on a new set of problems for Charles as he is forced to remember his childhood in a factory because of his father’s lifestyle. When he hires a young maid (Anna Murphy), Charles is inspired with the magic of storytelling again and begins writing A Christmas Carol… the only problem being that Christmas is 6 weeks away and his finances won’t last until next year. In his very unique and interactive writing style, Charles creates a story centered around Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) and his distain for Christmas and kindness; the other characters (such as Donald Sumpter, Annette Badland, and John Henshaw) in the book begin to come alive for Charles as well, but the ending plagues him and refuses to come together. As Charles struggles to finalize all the details of his book, both story and publishing-wise, he must face his past if his book is to have any chance of a future.
This behind-the-scenes story of one of the world’s most beloved stories is truly captivating and endearing. Stevens is brilliant in his representation of the writer and his eccentric writing process. One of the greatest joys of this movie is watching the iconic characters come to life and develop throughout the story. While not all light and cheery, the overall tone of the movie is one of holiday celebration. The Man Who Invented Christmas is a fascinating story that works wonderfully to tell of Charles Dicken’s personal struggles and how he was reminded of the joy that Christmas brings.
