From Mary Poppins Returns.
Now that they have grown up and left the magic of their childhood far behind, siblings Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) are struggling. After the recent death of his wife, Michael is trying to pay back a loan to the bank so that he doesn’t lose the family home and trying to raise his three children: Anabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh), and Georgie (Joel Dawson). While Jane and their cook (Julie Walters) try to help Michael find the missing, home-saving papers, things are steadily falling apart for the Banks family… until Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) blows in and offers to be a nanny for the children. Forced to grow up because of the tragedies in their lives, the children have very little imagination, but with the help of a local lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Mary Poppins is able to show the children the magic of a little imagination. Mary Poppins, Jack, and the children go on several fantastic adventures with lamplighters and cousins (Meryl Streep) and even baths, however, with time quickly running out to pay back the loan, the children desperately try to find a way to save their father and home. The children even go so far as to ask the manager of the bank, Mr. Wilkins (Colin Firth), for help, but all their plans seem to fail. As all seems lost, Mary Poppins is the only one who can step in and help the Banks children save the day.
This sequel 54 years in the making is a continuation of the magic stories that were inspired by P. L. Travers’ series of books. It is a solid follow up to the much-loved classic that features all new music, brilliant scenery, bright costumes, and amazing acting from the cast. The film, characters, and score are reminiscent of the original, but with a few modern touches to create a classic for this generation. Blunt is perfect in her leading role, Miranda is lovable, and the three children bring a tangible innocence to their roles. Mary Poppins Returns is a fun and sweet story that manages to blend adulthood and fantasy perfectly.
