“Welcome to the big table, Sheriff.”

From Robin Hood.

When Robin (Taron Egerton), Lord of Loxley, is sent away to fight in the Crusades, he is forced to leave behind his wealth, family mansion, his beloved Sherwood, and the love of his life, Marion (Eve Hewson).  Over the next few years, Robin fights his way across the Middle East, honing his skill with the bow, but when he disobeys an order from his commanding officer (Paul Anderson) to execute a surrendered boy in front of his also-surrendered father, John (Jamie Foxx), Robin is sent home.  However, the Sherwood he left 5 years ago is not the Sherwood he returns to.  In his strong effort to support the soldiers of the Crusades, the Sheriff (Ben Mendelsohn) has taxed most of the common people out of their homes and into the mines where they are led by Will Scarlet (Jamie Dornan); Robin also arrives home to discover that the Sheriff announced his death two years ago which resulted in all his possession being taken and Marion dating Will.  With only the bumbling Friar Tuck (Tim Minchin) aware of his safe return, Robin struggles greatly with what to do until he discovers that John, has escaped and followed him home to seek revenge on the man he holds responsible: the Sheriff.  Robin feels that something is not right with the Sheriff’s taxing and motivation to continue the fighting, so he dons a hood and mask and begins to take back some gold for the poor people Marion finds herself living with.  As a lord, Robin is able to discover some of the Sheriff’s secrets, both as a trusted confidant and as the criminal know as Hood.

This slightly-modernized remake of the classic story is captivating in unexpected ways.  While the story is basically the same, the action and stylization are the real draw; loads of action scenes are woven together with a big cast and some humor to create an enjoyable experience.  The action is not especially bloody, but the production team managed to use bows, arrows, and chariots to make Robin Hood a very fun adventure.
