“To kindness and love, the things we need most.”

From The Grinch.

While the town of Whoville loves to boldly celebrate Christmas, up in a mountain cave on the outskirts of town lives the one who adamantly hates the Who’s Christmas celebrations and cheer: the Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch).  A trip into Whoville to buy food causes Grinch to bump into festive, over-friendly Whos; despite his best efforts to avoid him, he still runs into a Who from his childhood (Kenan Thompson) who believes that the pair are friends and that decorating his house is one of the best ways to celebrate.  As the rhyming narrator (Pharrell Williams) informs the viewer, Grinch does his best to distance himself from the Whos and ignore their many Christmas happenings, but when the mayor (Angela Lansbury) announces that this year’s Christmas celebrations should be three times bigger, it pushes Grinch over the edge. So with the help of his faithful dog Max, he begins making plans to steal all the Who’s Christmas presents and decorations, ending their annoying celebrations once and for all… but he’s not the only one making plans for Christmas Eve. A sweet little Who, Cindy-Lou (Cameron Seely), is desperate to catch Santa this year so she can personally ask him to help her overworked, single mother-of-three mom (Rashida Jones). So as Grinch and Max work on stealing a sled, capturing a reindeer, and inventing Christmas-stealing tools, Cindy-Lou works on a plan that will cause both individuals to question why the other does what they do and how it’ll impact their December 25th.

This funny, family-friendly retelling of the classic Dr. Seuss tale manages to provide the nostalgia of the well-loved story for older viewers while also giving the story a fresh vibe for younger viewers. The comedy is constant and provides no reason for parents to worry about the content; there is one one-quick-and-clean-but-shocking clothing gag that would be risky in a live-action film, but Illumination made sure their film never crossed a line for family-friendliness. With brilliant voice acting and captivating animation, The Grinch is a hilarious holiday movie that is sure to be a family favorite for years to come.
