“You’ll be okay, as long as you don’t jump out this time.”

From Hunter Killer.

When disaster strikes for both a Russian and an American submarine in the Arctic Ocean, the hunter killer sub the USS Arkansas is given a new-to-command captain (Gerard Butler) and dispatched to check for survivors and answers to what happened below the surface.  While trying to connect with his new commanding officers (Carter MacIntyre and David Gyasi) and crew, Captain Glass must also protect them from the threats that seem to push in on them with every move.  In Washington DC, an admiral (Gary Oldman), a rear admiral (Common), and a NSA analyst (Linda Cardellini) are desperately trying to gather information on what’s going on in Russia, so they deploy a team of four Navy SEALs (Toby Stephens, Michael Trucco, Ryan McPartlin, and Zane Holtz) to enter Russia for answers.  Aboard the Arkansas it quickly becomes obvious that the missing subs where attacked by another Russian sub under the orders of the Russian DefenseMinister (Mikhail Gorevoy) actively plotting to overthrow the Russian President (Alexander Diachenko) and begin a global war.  With the help of a rescued Russian submarine captain (Michael Nyqvist), Glass must try to navigate the Arkansas into Russian waters to rescue the SEALs and the temporarily-overthrown president all without making a single mistake, because the safety of all the world hangs loosely in the balance.

This action thriller is an interesting story with a variety of storylines, plot developments, and twists to easily keep viewers engaged from start to finish.  Butler does well to keep the story moving forward, especially in the more dialog-centered scenes, but he is also greatly aided by the rest of the cast as well.  While the story is not super original in its lone-soldiers-save-the-world premises, it is a movie that is enjoyable to watch without robbing the audience of surprises and twists.  One major accomplishment of the movie is the use of intricate sets and camera work to expand the scenes set inside the submarine.  Hunter Killer is filled with thrilling military action and it is a perfect choice for movie night.
