From The Old Man & The Gun.
In 1981, when Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford) meets the sweet Jewel (Sissy Spacek) she believes him to be a perfectly charming gentleman, but little does she know that he and his two friends (Danny Glover and Tom Waits) are effective bank robbers. Forrest uses his age, respectful attitude, and happy personality to rob banks all across the country, without hurting anyone or alerting authorities to the severity of the heists. Until, that is, Detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck) is unknowingly present for one of Forrest’s robberies and with the encouragement of his wife (Tika Sumpter), Hunt makes it his personal mission to track down the old thief that carried off a robbery right under his nose. While being followed by Hunt, Forrest continues to pull off small robberies all across the Midwest while simultaneously continuing his romance with Jewel, trying balancing the his attraction to her with his lifelong attraction to crime. As Hunt and other authorities begin to close in on Forrest, it becomes apparent that the elderly bank robber continues with his life of crime for the simple enjoyment of the whole thing; Hunt is also able to learn of Forrest’s past, all of which has placed him on the wrong side of both the law and bars… for a time, at least. While Forrest knows that Hunt is investigating him, he refuses to let that do anything to change his life or dampen his bright outlook on life.
This gentle comedy is inspired by the real events of Forrest Tucker’s life of crime. Redford is brilliant in his role, bringing Tucker to life with a gentle, but bold personality that is heartbeat of the entire film. The movie has a laid-back vibe that really adds to the humor of the dialog and story, as well as the almost-unbelievable series of true events. The story is captivating, but never nerve-wracking or hurried; the outlandish life that Tucker led allows for the abbreviated retelling of his life to be the driving force for The Old Man & The Gun‘s attraction and enjoyment.
