From A Star Is Born.
The career of musician Jack Maine (Bradley Cooper) has spiraled out of control due to alcoholism and drug addiction, but when a unplanned stopped at a bar provides a chance for him to watch the talented nobody Ally (Lady Gaga) perform, it changes his life. Working as a waitress, Ally’s only chance to perform comes through a drag bar allows her to sing once a week and meet Jack. After spending the night talking and learning about each other, Jack invites Ally to his next show where he drags her on stage to sing one of her songs as a duet. Their performance together kickstarts their romantic relationship and launches Ally into fame. As Ally continues with them on the tour singing her heart-felt lyrics, Jack tries to lay down his addictions in an attempt to help Ally shine. Their lives are far from perfect though as Jack’s older half-brother (Sam Elliott) tries to manage the spiral that Jack’s addictions and past have become… especially when a manager (Rafi Gavron) approaches Ally and adds her to his label. As she’s quickly swept up in the whirlwind of celebrity, Ally’s dad (Andrew Dice Clay) and best friend (Anthony Ramos) encourage her to go all-in with advancing her career, but Jack struggles to watch the unique and genuine singer he fell in love with fall into the popular-but-cookie-cutter world of the modern music industry. Addiction, fights, relapses, and jealousy all seem to pull Ally and Jack apart, but finding their love for each other again might just be most impactful choice of their lives.
This remake of a remake of a remake is one that fautures a stellar cast, unique settings, and captivating music. Cooper does amazing, both as the film’s lead and director, but even he can do nothing to touch the powerful Lady Gaga’s stunning performance; both give an emotional and moving display, whether talking or singing. Rightfully so, the music is the center of the film and the soundtrack features a nice mix of music for fans of many genres. A Star Is Born is both uplifting and heartbreaking, but a strongly moving look at love, loss, fame, and true success.
