“The way I see it, we can do whatever we want.”

From Venom.

When investigative reporter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) gets the chance to interview Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) of the questionable Life Group, he uses his fiancée Anne’s (Michelle Williams) confidential work as one of the Group’s lawyers to ask the hard-hitting questions that he’s known for.  Drake is quick to shut down the interview and ruin Eddie’s life and career so that he can return to studying the alien life forms that his latest exploratory space mission brought back: the Symbiotes.  They were able to bring back four Symbiotes which need a living host to survive in Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere, but no matter what the Life Group scientists try, the host dies after a short time of hosting the symbiote.  Disturbed after witnessing the murder of multiple human test subjects, one scientist (Jenny Slate) contacts the disgraced Eddie and informs him that his distrust of Drake’s company was right and she sneaks him into the lab so he can see for himself.  Once inside, Eddie becomes infected and fleas the lab; over the next few days, he becomes sick and starts to hear a voice in his head.  With nowhere else to turn, he looks to Anne and her doctor boyfriend (Reid Scott) for help in finding what’s wrong with him, but Eddie quickly discovers that he is the host of the Symbiote Venom that enables Eddie to do amazing things.  Struggling to understand what’s happening to him, Eddie begins to work with Venom in order to save Earth for as long as his body will hold out.

This origin film focuses on the anti-hero side of the Venom character rather than the villain role he plays in other superhero movies and comics.  Hardy is perfect in the role of reluctant host turned justice-seeker; he manages to bring humor and heart to his character without losing Venom’s edge.  The special effects are brilliant making the symbiotic relationship between the main character and alien seamless.  Venom is a brilliant combination of action, humor, story development, and unique characters that never lags for a full-blown adventure.
