“Always and forever.”

From Little Women.

The March family is composed of two loving parents (Bart Johnson and Lea Thompson) and four daughters: the family-oriented Meg (Melanie Stone), the strongly opinionated and focused Jo (Sarah Davenport), the sweet Beth (Allie Jennings), and always-trying-to-act-older Amy (Elise Jones).  The girls are drastically different in their personalities, opinions, and dreams, but the four are fiercely loyal from their years of playing and pretending together as children.  While their father is away at war, the girls’ mother cares for and teaches the girls at home, so while their mother struggles with bills, the girls spend all their free time in the attic dreaming about who they will one day become.  The sisters are fascinated with daydreams of the people who live just on the outside of their life, such as the young Laurie (Lucas Grabeel) who moves in with his grandfather (Michael Lawrence Flynn) next door and the tutor (Stuart Edge) that is hired shortly thereafter.  As Jo struggles relentlessly to edit and publish a book, she begins to lose touch with her family and the magic of her childhood focusing instead on making the changes needed to satisfy her editor (Ian Bohen).  It’s only when a sick Beth forces Jo to return home does Jo realize how much she has missed and how important it is to never give up on the magic of family.

This modern retelling of the classic story provides an updated story of love, loss, dreams, and family. The cast works well together and each daughter carries her individuality perfectly. A few of the elements don’t transition well from the time the book was written to today, but the heart of the story and the focus on the sisters transfers perfectly. Some of the flashbacks are confusing at the start, but fans of the book will find Little Women to be a sweet and moving experience that will also attract new fans to the story.
