From Night School.
When Teddy (Kevin Hart) is unable to take the SAT test his senior year, he instead dropped out of high school to get a job with success and riches based on his work and not his grades. Jump forward 17 years and Teddy is doing well as a salesman until he accidentally blows up the store while proposing to his girlfriend (Megalyn Echikunwoke). His best friend from high school (Ben Schwartz) offers him a job, but Teddy will have to get his GED before he can start the job, so in order to keep his status as a drop out secret from his now-fiancée Teddy, enrolls in night school at his old high school. The class of six is composed of Teddy, four mismatched and underachieving adults (Mary Lynn Rajskub, Romany Malco, Rob Riggle, and Al Madrigal), one Skyping inmate (Fat Joe), and one trying-to-avoid-juvie teenager (Anne Winters). Teaching the class is the no-nonsense and sassy Carrie (Tiffany Haddish) who sees through all of Teddy’s fast talking hustling and forces him to do the work so that he can pass the test and get the job that he’s led everyone believe he already has. Teddy struggles to connect with the other students in his class and he also struggles to handle the high school principal (Taran Killam) who is the nerd Teddy picked on in high school, and to gain an understanding of the material in the GED prep book, but he might just be able to pass the test if he can learn to work with Carrie instead of against her.
This comedy is full of laughs, both verbal and physical, that allow Hart to really shine as the center of the comedy, especially when playing off of the rest of the cast. The story builds at a steady pace and doesn’t jump around to make the story feel cut short. The characters of the night school students are a bit stereotypical at the start as is their character development by the end, but it all works to make Night School the hilarious feel-good movie that it is.
