“Hope you get better soon.”

From Peppermint.

The North family is a fairly average family; Chris (Jeff Hephner) is a mechanic working hard to provide for his family, Riley (Jennifer Garner) is a dedicated wife and mother that spends all her time with her family when not working as a bank teller, Carly (Cailey Fleming) is a sweet little girl focused on things like selling cookies for her troop and eating lots of peppermint ice cream for her birthday.  When one of Chris’ friends has a run-in with Diego Garcia (Juan Pablo Raba), a vicious drug dealer moving up the ranks of the Mexican cartel, a hit is put on the North family to make an example of them.  Riley survives the attack with major injuries, but her husband and daughter are killed.  Even though she saw the three men responsible for her family’s murder, Garcia managed to buy off the judge, D.A.s, and other officials connected with the case, so Riley’s left with no other options and must disappear when the charges are dropped.  Now five years later, a FBI agent (Annie Ilonzeh) takes a special interest in the case that Detectives Beltran (John Ortiz) and Carmichael (John Gallagher) have been assigned to because she believes it is connected to Riley North’s return to Los Angeles.  Unable to get justice legally, Riley spent five years training all across the world to come back and take justice on those responsible for her family’s death and sham of a case.  Fighting corrupt cops and leading an all-out war on LA’s drug cartels may cost her everything, but nothing will stand in the way of this revenge-seeking mother.

This thrilling action film has an almost Equalizer-vibe to it, but in a way that highlights how far a mother can go for her family.  The action is constant and well-planned, with Garner’s attitude and knack for survival displayed strongly throughout the entire movie.  While most of the gore is not over-the-top, it is frequent and highlighted several times.  Peppermint is the perfect movie for those looking for a solidly-lead action story.
