“Again, this is live footage.”

From Searching.

David Kim (John Cho) and his daughter Margot (Michelle La) are struggling to connect with each other after the recent death of Mrs. Kim (Sara Sohn).  Their current relationship is strained compared to what it used to be, but things seem to be fine, that is until Margot doesn’t come home one night and disappears from all those around her.  The Kims’ picture-perfect life quickly crumbles as David scrambles to find out what happened to Margot.  David works with Detective Vick (Debra Messing), the officer assigned to the case, and together they use Margo’s computer, various social media accounts, contact list, and her web history in an effort to discover what happened before Margot went missing.  David searches every profile he can find connected to Margot’s online life, but he is only able to learn that Margot is a loner at school, lying to him on a regular basis, and that she’s been hiding something big.  When Detective Vick tells David that he has to step back from the investigation because he is too close, he turns to his brother (Joseph Lee), but eventually jumps back in to scouring the internet in order to find his daughter.  As the investigation goes from bad to worse, David is left feeling helpless in his search for any clue related to the truth of his daughter’s disappearance.

This movie is very interesting and from start to finish because it develops the story completely through computer and cellphone screens.  Even though the settings are fairly limited because of this movie’s format, it never feels stuffy or boring; the style actually makes the movie that much more realistic and captivating.  While this thriller is mild for the majority of the film, there are several scenes that will push viewers to the edge of their seats.  Searching includes all the elements of a truly engaging movie that audiences could ever want; packed with emotion and real-world suspense, it will keep everyone guessing until the final credits roll.
