“Yo, Eli!”

From Kin.

Still struggling with the death of his mother, 14-year-old Eli (Myles Truitt) finds himself getting in trouble at school and scavenging abandon buildings to make some extra money while his father (Dennis Quaid) works hard to support them both.  While scavenging in one of his regular buildings, Eli find a group of dead masked soldiers and a futuristic weapon that he takes home; he hides the gun under his bed and goes on with his normal routine.  When his older brother Jimmy (Jack Reynor) is released from prison, he comes home after six years with a $60,000 debt for protection to the ruthless Taylor (James Franco) and his brother Dutch (Gavin Fox).  Unable to raise the funds to pay back the brothers, Jimmy turns to his father for help but since his father doesn’t have that kind of money either, Jimmy decides to take Taylor to break in to the safe at his fathers construction business.  However, when things go terribly wrong with Jimmy’s dangerous plan he finds himself in grave danger again, so he takes Eli and heads off on a cross country trip to keep Eli away from Taylor’s revenge.  Along the way, they meet a stripper (Zoë Kravitz) who is desperate to escape the life she’s in, so she joins the brothers on their trip and helps to bridge the gap between the brothers.  A call from Eli to his father alerts Taylor and the rest of his crew to their whereabouts, so while Jimmy and Eli are unknowingly being hunted by Taylor, they are also being followed by a pair of mysterious soldiers that are using out-of-this-world technology to track Eli’s gun… and time seems to be running out for Eli and Jimmy.

The special effects in this movie are the biggest treat in this movie.  The story is interesting, the actors are solid in their roles, and there are a few twists that keep it interesting; it’s an enjoyable balance between action, heart(break), and humor.  Kin is a fun sci-fi movie that provides the perfect escape for a few hours.
