From Alpha.
Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is deemed man enough to join the yearly hunting expedition, he joins his father (Johannes Haukur Johannesson) and the rest of the men to hunt. Armed with spears and knives, the men travel along the Sacred Path to the hunting ground to keep their tribe alive for another year. When a rogue buffalo charges Keda, the frighten boy runs away from his father and is sent over a cliff. Sure that no one could survive a fall that killed heard of buffalo, the rest of the hunting party begin the journey home without Keda. When Keda regains consciousness, he is alone and badly injured; with only the clothes on his back and a knife in his pocket, Keda is left to face both the elements and the dangerous wildlife… including a pack of wolves that begins to trail him. Once the wolves catch up to him, Keda is able to injure one and disperse the rest of the pack, but the kindhearted boy is unable to kill the wolf and instead decides to nurse it back to health. When the wolf is healed, it refuses to leave Keda, so the boy and the wolf set off trying to follow the path home before the snow covers the way. Along the way, Keda is able to tame the wild animal while Alpha (the wolf) shows Keda how to survive.
Set 20,000 years in the past, this movie uses gorgeous visuals to tell the story; not only with brilliant special effects, but also breathtaking cinematography that highlights the beauty of nature. This movie is not dialogue-heavy and whenever there is dialogue it is in another language with captions in English. Smit-McPhee carries his mainly-solo role very well, acting convincingly as both terrified boy and self-reliant man. The biggest disappointment from this movie comes from the use of CGI wolves which is fairly noticeable in a handful of scenes. However, overall Alpha is a captivating movie that celebrates the relationship between human and canine.
