“Shall we ask my mom?”

From The Meg.

Five years ago, Jonas (Jason Statham)  left his career as a deep sea rescuer behind after he was forced to make a terrible choice that made him an outcast.  In the present, a billionaire Morris (Rainn Wilson) has arrived at an oceanic state-of-the-art science research center because after years of funding it the research and development, he is ready to meet with the lead scientist, Dr. Zhang (Winston Chao) and the rest of the team; Zhang and his daughter, Suyin (Li Bingbing), and granddaughter (Shuya Sophia Cai) have made the aquatic facility their home for the past few years.  When three members (Jessica McNamee, Masi Oka, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) of a exploratory team discover a previously unknown section of the ocean floor, disaster in the shape of something huge strikes.  Since they’re running out of both time and options crew leader Mac (Cliff Curtis) brings in Jonas for the rescue.  While Jonas’ rescue is successful, a flawed side effect comes to light that their escape also allowed the release of a megaladon into the rest of the ocean and world.  Jonas, Mac, Morris, Dr. Zhang, and Suyin, along with other top scientists and engineers (Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, and Robert Taylor) from the facility head off to track the Meg and stop it before it can reach the civilization and destroy life as we know it.

This fun monster movie is filled with amazing special effects, solid acting, and a humor-filled script.  The violence mimics Jurassic Park in style, never completely stomach-turning, but using editing that suggests heavy carnage.  While there are a few scenes where audiences can tell that there is a jump-scare or giant shark coming, the real excitement of the film comes from the sheer size of the shark.  Stathom leads the talented and diverse cast where each actor is able to bring their uniqueness to the mix without overshadowing anyone else.  The Meg is a wild ride that avoids horror by filling itself with humor and the unbeatable human spirit.
