From The Equalizer 2.
While former CIA operative Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has some quirks, he lives a life that is, to most people in his life, unexceptional. McCall lives in a simple apartment complex, tries to keep his young neighbor (Ashton Sanders) from falling in with the wrong crowd, works as a Lyft driver, spends the majority of his time reading, and uses his spare time righting the wrongs that he sees going on around him. After he used his assumed death to leave the Agency behind, McCall only kept in touch with his old handler, Susan (Melissa Leo) and her husband (Bill Pullman), but over the years their relationship has grown into one of deep friendship. When the suicide of a deep-cover CIA asset is marked suspicious, Susan and fellow CIA agent Dave York (Pedro Pascal) are sent to Brussels to investigate. After visiting the crime scene, the agents gather the information from local police and head to the hotel to check out before returning to America. As Sarah is entering her hotel room, she is attacked and murdered by two thugs. Sarah’s death pushes McCall to step out of his life of anonymity to contact his ex-partner York for help in tracking down Sarah’s killers. With the help and information provided by York, McCall soon discovers that Sarah’s death was not a random attack, but rather an assassination used to hide the involvement of a dangerously-connected hit team… and only Robert McCall has the skills to track them down and make them pay for his friend’s murder.
This movie is packed with stylish action and violence that is reminiscent of the 2014 original, but also different enough to be its own movie. Washington again does an amazing job of bringing his conflicted character to life as both a strong action man and heartfelt lead. The plot features several twists that push this thriller forward easily and the variety of settings featured offer the cast the chance to exhibit diversity in their acting. The Equalizer 2 is a captivating movie that reaches the perfect balance between action, revenge, and heart.
