From Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is in Greece preparing for the grand re-opening of the hotel that she hopes will honor the legacy of her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). Gathering to be with Sophie for the re-opening are Donna’s friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), Sophie’s boyfriend (Dominic Cooper), and Sophie’s three dads: Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), and Sam (Pierce Brosnan). When arguments and other circumstances threaten the happiness of the re-opening, the hotel manager (Andy Garcia) and townspeople band together to do all they can for Sophie. Jump back to 1979 as Donna (Lily James) and her two best friends (Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn) have just graduated from college. While her friends are content with their current setup, Donna heads out looking for adventure on a trip that will keep her away from her mother (Cher) and that will ultimately lead her to a small island of Greece and three very special young men. Traveling through France, she meets a wannabe-rebel named Harry (Hugh Skinner) who instantly falls for her and then when she misses a ferry, Donna meets a smooth-talking sailor, Bill (Josh Dylan), but once she arrives on that fateful island, Donna quickly falls for Sam (Jeremy Irvine) who says he’s running from something… but it seems to be towards her. What takes place for young Donna over the next few weeks is a chaotic adventure, filled with love, heartbreak, and life-molding memories; Sophie also sees her life play out in very similar ways to her mother so that she is reminded that life will always be an adventure as long as she surrounds herself with people that she loves.
The sequel to the 2008 movie learns from the original to create a story that is endearing and enjoyable. The cast chosen to play the young characters are perfect, especially James, and the return of the original cast is a treat. There are fewer innuendos in the sequel, which keeps the focus on the true star: the music. While a few songs do repeat, the majority of the soundtrack is made up of new-to-movie ABBA hits. Here We Go Again is a fun sequel filled with wonderful actors and catchy songs and definitely not to be missed by fans.
