“You’re It, baby!”

From Tag.

Five adult friends from all over across America have been joining together every year to play tag during the month of May; this tradition has gone on for 30 years, allowing the busy adults time to reconnect, make mischief-filled memories, and have some fun.  It all starts when Hoagie (Ed Helms) and his wife, Anna (Isla Fisher) interrupt company CEO Bob (Jon Hamm) as he’s giving an interview to a journalist (Annabelle Wallis) from the Wall Street Journal announcing that Jerry (Jeremy Renner), their never-been-tagged friend is calling it quits after this season of tag ends.  The friends are reluctant to let him quit, especially with a perfect record, so they head off to meet up with the two remaining players, Randy (Jake Johnson) and Sable (Hannibal Buress).  The journalist decides this is too much of a story to just let go, so she joins the guys and Anna as they head off to their hometown to crash Jerry’s wedding.  The friends only have a few days left to master Jerry’s untouchable skills, the pleas of the annoyed bride-to-be (Leslie Bibb), old friends (such as Rashida Jones), and all the craziness that life throws their way.  What follows is one of the most craziest, intense games of tag ever played in an attempt to tag Jerry before June 1st rolls around.

This truth-inspired story is a fascinating look into the friendships that last a lifetime and what that mild craziness looks like.  The story line is fascinating and the actors do a good job of blending funny with just the right amount of insanity; the main characters are vastly different, both in real life and fiction, but they connect on screen as a perfectly balanced group.  The action uses a stylized brand of fun that keeps the story from becoming bland or repetitive, while the tagging and avoiding-being-tagged plans are over-the-top impressive.  There are certain moments that seem out of sync with the rest of the movie’s comedy, but overall, Tag is the perfect comedy to catch with friends.
