“You would’ve loved it.”

From Ocean’s 8.

After five years, Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) is finally being released from prison.  As the younger sister of Danny Ocean, she’s a con woman from a family of cons.  Once released, she heads to New York City and begins to put into action a plan that she developed during her incarceration.  Debbie’s plan is to use the annual Met Gala as an opportunity to steal a $150 million diamond necklace.  All she has to do is get the necklace on the neck of actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), get in and out of the Gala, steal the necklace, and replace it with a fake without any of the social elite noticing.  In order to pull this heist off, Debbie enlists the help of Lou (Cate Blanchett) the best friend/old partner, Amita (Mindy Kaling) the jeweler, Nine Ball (Rihanna) the hacker, Tammy (Sarah Paulson) the fence, Constance (Awkwafina) the pick pocket, and Rose (Helena Bonham Carter) the fashion designer.  Debbie had her entire prison sentence to create a foolproof plan that will provide a huge pay day for everyone involved, but with only a few weeks to prepare before the Met Gala arrives, this small group of highly skilled women must work overtime to pull off the heist of the century.

This all-female addition to the Ocean’s series is fun, witty, and inventive.  Moving away from casinos and vault hustles, this story shifts to fashion and bling in a way that allows the theme to carry over, even if the focus changes.  Each woman cast brings a unique character to life, allowing the success of the movie to be found in the mix of all their differences.  Ocean’s 8 doesn’t feel like a relaunching of the series, but rather a continuation of everything that makes the stories so great; the fun story line will easily capture the viewer’s attention with twists and surprises that will keep everyone guessing until the very end when all the puzzle pieces click together, just like the original trilogy.
