From Life of the Party.
After they drop their daughter, Maddie (Molly Gordon), off for her senior year at Decatur University, Dan (Matt Walsh) tells Deanna (Melissa McCarthy), his wife of over 20 years, that he wants a divorce because he’s in love with a local real estate agent (Julie Bowen). Deanna dropped out of college after her junior year of college to raise Maddie, so she is now left without any way to support herself and nowhere to live. With the encouragement of her friend (Maya Rudolph), Deanna decides to go back to college and finish her degree. Since she only has two semesters left for her to earn her archeology degree, Deanna is able to be with her daughter and connect with some of Maddie’s friends (Gillian Jacobs, Jessie Ennis, and Adria Arjona). However, Deanna still must struggle with the divorce, managing parties with studying, a crazy, scary roommate (Heidi Gardner), former-classmates-turn-professors, a budding relationship with a frat boy (Luke Benward), and worst of all: class presentations. While Deanna feels that she is completely out of her element, she’s also slowly learning how to give life her all and do things for herself; college life has definitely in the twenty years since Deanna left, but that doesn’t mean that it can be any less amazing of an experience now.
McCarthy’s newest comedy is an interesting view of young adulthood and middle age lifestyles pushed together with unexpected results; the stereotypes are drawn out in different areas, but it is humorous to watch it all unfold. The partying and intense drinking seem a bit out of character for Deanna near the beginning of the story, but as her character is developed more, everything balances out. Rudolph and Jacobs shine, both as supporting actresses and comedic gold; each one giving the perfect amount of crazy ignorance to keep the laughs coming. Life of the Party is a funny and (mostly) sweet story that will provide viewers with a perfect escape from the craziness of life.
