From Breaking In.
When her father is killed in a hit-and-run accident, Shaun Russell (Gabrielle Union) inherits his estate, even though she hasn’t spoken to her criminal father for decades. Shaun heads to his vacation home with her kids Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) and Glover (Seth Carr) to pack everything up and get the house ready to sell. They arrive to find it all just as Shaun left it all those years ago, except the security measures in the house are beyond belief; cameras, motion sensors, electronic locks, and reinforce windows are just some of the features that have turned this vacation home into a modern fortress. A short time after their arrival, the family realizes they are not alone in the house when a man who calls himself Eddie (Billy Burke) and his small team of thugs (Levi Meaden, Richard Cabral, and Mark Furze) lock Shaun out of the house and themselves in the house with the kids. Eddie informs Shaun that they are looking for the safe that’s hidden in the house and once they have the contents, they’ll release Jasmine and Glover. Things escalate quickly and Shaun realizes that she must take control of the action if she wants to get her kids out safely. Shaun uses her childhood knowledge of the house, the security system, and her unconditional love to stop the men and keep her children safe.
This thriller is a captivating look into how far a mother will go for her children; the idea that the ultra-secure house can be used as a weapon is also a fun plot to see played out. Union is the perfect fit for the lead role as she is strong, focused, and believable in every scene. Burke and Cabral also provide the perfect amount of fear and hate to the film, which helps to propel the viewer deeper into the story. While not overly gory, there are some moments where jump-scares combine with violence to pack a punch. Breaking In is a movie that allows the mother-led thriller to develop the action along with a heartfelt emotion.
