From Isle of Dogs.
In the near future, faced with a overpopulation of dogs infected with snout fever, Japanese Mayor Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura) issues a law that all dogs in the city of Megasaki are to be placed on Trash Island several miles off the coast. While some dogs are strays or wild, the majority of the dogs are pets, abandoned by their owners in a move of mass hysteria. The mayor’s nephew and ward, Atari (Koyu Rankin), is saddened that his pet/guard dog was sent away to Trash Island, so the little boy steals a plane and flies over to rescue his dog, Spots (Liev Schreiber). Upon crashing on the island he meets with a rag tag pack of dogs: Chief (Bryan Cranston), Boss (Bob Murray), Duke (Jeff Goldblum), Rex (Edward Norton), and King (Bob Balaban). While none of the dogs have met Spots, they agreed to help the boy find his lost dog. Back on the mainland, the mayor discovers that his nephew has run off to the island and launches crew of humans and robot dogs to bring the boy back safely. Tracy (Greta Gerwig), a foreign exchange student working with her school newspaper is part of a small pro-dog movement; she begins a personal investigation into the manipulation of the people and the cover-up of the plan to remove dogs from the city. The more that Tracy digs into the story and the longer that Atari continues searching for Spots with the pack of dogs, the more obvious it becomes that something much darker and much more dangerous is being planned for the dogs.
Wes Anderson’s newest stop-motion film is a comedy that is more relatable than some of his other films. The vast array of actors used to voice the characters are a treat to listen to, fully giving life to the dogs and the people they’ve been cast play. The story is simple and sweet with a seam of dry humor incorporated into every scene. Isle of Dogs is an enjoyable movie that will capture anyone that’s had the privilege of owning a dog.
