“Is it physical?”

From I Feel Pretty.

Single, slightly-overweight Renee (Amy Schumer) works as a website manager for a high-end cosmetics company in New York City.  Along with her solid job, she has great friends (Aidy Bryant and Busy Philipps), but she feels that because she’s not pretty, her life is desperately lacking.  One night, she makes a wish to be beautiful and then bangs her head during spin class, knocking herself unconscious only to wake up and believe she has become instantly beautiful.  While she still looks exactly the same, her attitude and confidence have completely changed which leads her to find a boyfriend (Rory Scovel) and to land a job as the secretary working under the cosmetic company’s new company CEO, Avery LeClaire (Michelle Williams).  The company is in the midst of creating a line of make up products for more affordable retailers, and Avery frequently turns to Renee for ideas.  Renee’s belief that she has been transformed into a completely different-looking person causes her to do things that distances her from friends and anyone she thinks is under her.  The world seems to now be at Renee’s fingertips, but it leaves her questioning if the magic too good to last.

Schumer’s newest comedy will relate with the large majority of viewers that struggle with issues of doubt and self-worth, but it also takes a lighthearted approach to make a strong, valid point.  There are lots of laughable moments in this movie and a plethora of hilarious one-liners that help to balance out the more somber moments of the film.  Schumer leads a solid cast with a wide variety of characters that help to make this movie memorable and full of heart.  While some may criticize Schumer’s body type/size, she really is the perfect fit for the role as she is just heavy enough to stand out from the ultra slim characters, but she is also relatable to “the rest of us” that are just in the middle.  I Feel Pretty is a movie that takes a simple idea and transforms it into a thought-provoking journey filled with fun and laughter.
