From The Cloverfield Paradox.
In the near future, Earth’s energy resources have been almost depleted so that the only chance for Earth’s survival is to create a giant particle accelerator on the Cloverfield Station. Ava Hamilton (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is reluctant to leave her husband (Roger Davies) to join the mission, but is convinced that saving the world is more important, so she agrees to join the mission. What should have been only a weeks-long mission turns into an almost a two year challenge, with the crew trying each day to get the accelerator to work. When the crew is down to their last two tries, final calculations are adjusted and it finally works, but the crew’s joy soon turns to terror as they realize that earth has disappeared. The six-person crew (including David Oyelowo, Zhang Ziyi, Daniel Bruhl, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, and Aksel Hennie) begins to face unimaginable terrors and disasters after the apparent paradox that took place when they successfully fired the machine. Everything is still unclear to them until the crew discover a woman (Elizabeth Debicki) onboard who claims to be a member of the same mission… from a different dimension. The un-trustable environment becomes the setting for a life-and-death fight to reverse the effects of the paradox and find a way to get home.
The third installment in the Cloverfield series acts as a bridge between the worlds of the first two movies. The movie sets out to distinguish itself by siding with the sci-fi horror genre; unfortunately, the horror is not as strong as it could have been, but is an enjoyable part of the story when it is present. The plot is not a terribly complex one, but it is fun to watch for fans of the sci-fi genre. The cast is made up of a very diverse collection of actors, which is one of the highlights of the movie, and the special effects are captivating to watch. While The Cloverfield Paradox is probably not the best of the series, it is an overall solid addition to the Cloverfield canon.
