From Pacific Rim Uprising.
Ten years after the people of earth created giant robots called Jaegers to fight against ginormous monsters (Kaiju) that rose up out of the ocean, the world is still on edge with preparations for a second Kaiju war. Jaeger pilot wash-out Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) now spends his time partying and stealing decommissioned Jaeger parts for sale on the black market. When his latest illegal plan goes very badly, Jake runs into a young girl, Amara (Cailee Spaeny) who has built her own small jaeger… which is very illegal. After taking her Jaeger out for a test drive, Amara is arrested and Jake is arrested for being with her. Both are sent against their will to the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps training facility in China; Amara is recruited into the program as a cadet and Jake as a ranger/commanding officer over a group of cadets. Forced to work with old friends (such as Scott Eastwood, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi), Jake hopes his punishment will be short lived as Liwen Shoa arrives to introduce her drone-piloted jaeger program, which is led by Dr. Newton (Charlie Day). However, things quickly begin to fall apart when an unidentified Jaeger rises out of the Pacific Ocean to attack Sydney on the day the drone program is being revealed. A rapid series of secrets, deceptions, and attacks quickly push Jake, his cadets, and the rest of the PPDC into a war to save earth like never before.
This sequel is a fun, action-packed adventure that takes the best elements from the first movie and moves past the clunky elements that held the original back. Using Boyega as a main character that has failed and turned to a life of crime works well for a redemption story and it also develops steadily throughout the film. The fight scenes are fun and larger than life, with graphics that draw the viewer completely into the action. This sequel managed to bring back almost all the characters from the original, while adding strong new characters to carry the story. Pacific Rim Uprising is a well-written story that will keep audiences in delighted suspense until the very end.
