From A Wrinkle in Time.
Meg Murry’s (Storm Reid) world is falling apart; her father (Chris Pine) has disappeared and Meg, her mother (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), and her younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) are left searching for answers. As a scientist, her father was brilliant, but his latest project on space/time travel somehow led to his mysterious disappearance four years ago. The Murry family is left with all dead ends and more questions than answers… until three mysterious women arrive: the ditzy and curious Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), the only-speaks-in-quotes Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and the wise Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey). The women claim to know not only what happened to Meg’s father, but also how to find him. With the help of her friend Calvin (Levi Miller) and Charles Wallace, Meg decides to search for her father and help bring him home. Their introduction to the three women quickly propels the children into a quest to other worlds, people (including Zach Galifianakis), and dimensions to find and save Doctor Murry. Along the way, Meg and the boys discover a mysterious darkness that is overtaking everything and is somehow connected to Doctor Murry’s work, but can Meg figure out how to save her father or will he be lost forever?
This newest adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic children’s book is a breath-taking display of visual wonder and excitement; the special effects easily carry the audience into the world(s) on the screen. The cast is quite the collection of stars that come together to create solid onscreen chemistry, especially the roles of the three Mrs. The greatest flaw in the movie comes from the pacing at the end of the film that will confuse those not already familiar with the story; the characters spend so much time on the journey to save Dr. Murry that the final confrontation of good vs. evil feels underdeveloped, as if to keep a certain running time the plot was cut instead of some visual effects shots. However, overall, A Wrinkle in Time is a fun adventure filled with bravery and heart that the entire family can enjoy.
