From Samson.
Since before he was born, Samson (Taylor James) was promised God’s favor as a judge for the people of Israel if he would abstain from drinking wine, touching the dead, and cutting his hair. In return for keeping these vows, Sampson has grown in incredible, supernatural strength, but he is reluctant to be a leader for his people… even though his parents (Lindsay Wagner and Rutger Hauer) and brother (Greg Kriek) constantly remind him that that is his calling. Philistines have taken over Israel and forced the Hebrews to live as slaves; the king (Billy Zane) and his son, Rallah (Jackson Rathbone) will stop at nothing to destroy the hope of the Israelite people. Samson is rebellious, neglectful of his duties, and always looking for trouble with the Philistines. One day while disobeying his father and picking a fight, Samson meets Taren (Frances Sholto-Douglas) and falls in love with the Philistine slave girl; the only problem is that she is Prince Rallah’s slave. In order to win her hand in marriage, Sampson must battle the prince in a battle of wits. Samson’s refusal to do right seems to lead him farther and farther away from his family and God and simultaneously deeper into painful struggles. Through all the fighting and running, Samson meets Delilah (Caitlin Leahy) and he must try to figure out who he can trust and what his purpose is in life.
This retelling of Samson’s story from the book of Judges in the Bible brings lots of intense action to the screen. There are a few painful CGI shots scattered throughout the film, but overall the special effects are good. Samson’s bravado is played very well by Taylor James; he easily captivates the attention of the audience, both in looks and attitude. There are some issues with the fundamentals of this movie such as hair or wardrobe, but it is definitely an fascinating look at the Bible story. Those familiar with the story will enjoy seeing Samson’s life played out on the big screen and the movie is also enjoyable for those who are unfamiliar with the story, but are looking for an action movie with a relatable hero.
