From Forever My Girl.
After leaving his fiancé, Josie (Jessica Rothe) on their wedding day to start his musical career with a tour, Liam Page’s (Alex Roe) fame has soared but his life has fallen apart. While he has all the fame and fortune that he could ever want, he is struggling to write new songs or connect with the world around him. A high school friend’s sudden death rocks Liam and sends him back to his hometown. He slips away from his manager, fans, and tours to head home to the quiet town after 8 years away. Liam is greeted by a town that resents him for leaving Josie. Liam discovers that when he left Josie he also left their unborn child, a little girl named Billy (Abby Ryder Fortson) that is spunky and sweet. Within a few minutes of meeting Billy, Liam longs for the chance to get to know his daughter. Liam’s struggle to write music begins to melt away as he gets closer with Billy, Josie, and his father (John Benjamin Hickey). In fact, things seem to be going perfectly for Liam, but after all the terrible choices he’s made in his life, how long can it last?
The characters are brought to life by a nice collection of actors, all of whom carry their emotions perfectly. Fortson is also a surprising strength for the movie; she is sweet and innocent where appropriate and then witty and sarcastic when a change of pace is needed. Some elements of the movie have a faith-based feel to them, but there really isn’t a sense that the movie is overtly religious, just subtle ideas that enhance the storyline and keep the movie appropriate for family viewing. The movie has the feel of a Nicholas sparks movie without the required sexual tension and sexual tension-ending love scene(s). Forever My Girl is a sweet romantic story with a drama that’s not over the top, but also solidly laced into the story to give the movie enough strength to stand on its own.
