From 12 Strong.
When the Twin Towers fell, America slammed to a shocked, heartbroken halt, but Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth) and the eleven Special Forces soldiers under his command prepared for a mission that would change the world. Just a few weeks after the September 11th attacks, these twelve soldiers (including Michael Pena, Geoff Stults, Michael Shannon, Trevante Rhodes, and many others) landed in Afghanistan to begin the fight against the Taliban. While many above Nelson doubt him as a captain since he has yet to set foot in battle, the men who have trained under him trust him completely and willingly follow him as the first soldiers in Afghanistan after 9/11. The soldiers are tasked with working with a local warlord, General Dostum (Navid Negahban) and his small army as they free the villages as they move towards a city that they believe is the key to the Taliban and al-Qaida’s control. Faced with challenges from the moment they land in the country, including limited resources and using horses for transportation, these soldiers are all that stand between al-Qaida and America’s safety. Stranded from American support, surrounded by questionable allies, and hunted by countless enemies, it is up to these dozen men to find a way to do the impossible in three short weeks before it is too late.
This war movie based on true events stands tall in all aspects of military epics. The action and battle scenes are realistic with a strong helping of special effects and pyrotechnics. The movie finds the balance between showing the horrors and destruction of war without turning into a constant shower of blood; this is not to say that the movie is gore-free, because there are some scenes that are intense both in focused-on and passing images. The cast is diverse with each character memorable, regardless of their time on screen or role; the real strength of the film comes from the dedication and humanity that the main characters bring to their roles. 12 Strong is an incredible story of one team’s willingness to set their safety aside for the safety of the entire country; definitely not a movie to be missed.
