From All the Money in the World.
In 1973, 16-year-old Paul Getty (Charlie Plummer) is kidnapped from Rome because his grandfather is the richest man in the world: Jean Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer). His captors set the ransom at $17 million and expect Getty to quickly pay the price to return the boy, but Getty is so tightfisted that he refuses to pay anything to the kidnappers; this leaves Paul’s mother Gail to fight desperately to convince her former father-in-law to change his mind before it is too late. Getty refuses to give away any of his fortune, but he does assign his head of security, Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg), to stay/work with Gail and work on locating the boy. Paul is held in different parts of the Italian countryside for months, and while he is not released, he does win the favor of one of his captors (Romain Duris). Gail and Getty are the focus of the world’s media, but only Gail is truly tormented by her son’s abduction. Gail is continuously reminded that while she bears the Getty name, she will have to find another way to wield the influence of Getty and his fortune before Paul runs out of time.
This movie is a success for several reasons, but the primary one is the amazing cast that bring this true story to life on the screen. Williams bring such heart to her role, Wahlberg’s level-headedness contrasts well to the calamity around him, and Plummer’s Getty is the ruthless miser that few others could portray. Plummer’s last-minute addition to the cast, which was filmed only one month before the film’s release, seems to change the feel of the entire movie and is an accomplishment for all cast and crew involved. The pace of the movie is beautifully written so that it carries the seriousness of the situation without overwhelming the viewer with anxiety. Based on the heart-wrenching true story of fortune, family, and their competing values, this movie is thrilling from start to finish and definitely worth the watch!
