“And what’s that?”

From The Commuter.

Cop-turned-insurance-salesman Michael (Liam Neeson) has been taking the commuter train to and from New York City every day for the past ten years.  He has come to know many of the daily commuters on the train as he sacrificed his dream job for his family.  After arriving to work on what seems like a normal day, Michael is informed that his position is being terminated immediately, which will place his family in a financial crisis.  On the crowded train home, a woman named Joanna (Vera Farmiga) strikes up a conversation with Michael and poses a simple offer: find the one passenger on the train that doesn’t belong and receive $100,000.  While Michael views the mysterious offer as a joke, it quickly becomes evident that is a much larger and dangerous plan in motion all around him.  Practically isolated from the outside world, Michael is struggling to both find the passenger and learn why they matter to Joanna; one short phone call with his ex-partner Detective Murphy (Patrick Wilson) helps to unravel the some of the mystery of the passenger and the people pulling the strings in this life-or-death commute.  With only his wit to help him escape the train alive, Michael is left with a train full of strangers and absolutely no way of knowing if there is anyone he can trust.

While this is a solid action/thriller starring Neeson, it is not another Taken or Non-Stop; there are similarities that fans will enjoy, but the story line and creation make it a unique film.  The opening sequence starts by showing the monotony of the commuter life, but the movie’s pace quickly picks up as the main mystery and challenge of the story are presented.  The constantly moving settings help to build the action and keep up that momentum, even in the quieter moments.  The action is realistic and the special effects are captivating, but the real win of The Commuter comes from the solid storyline that is a fun, engaging display of twists and turns.
