From The Greatest Showman.
The son of a lowly tailor, P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) only wants to provide a life of plenty and happiness for his wife (Michelle Williams) and daughters. After another job failure, Barnum is left with no way to provide for his family, but he develops an idea to open a wax museum in New York City filled with amazing animals and people from history. The Barnums invest their all in the museum, but it is a complete flop until P.T. gathers a handful of “unique people” to put on a show of oddities at the museum. Success quickly follows Barnum as he adds more acts (Keala Settle, Zendaya, Sam Humphrey, and Daniel Everidge) to his “circus” and a new business partner, Philip Carlyle (Zac Efron). In an attempt to gain success with a higher class of audience-members, Barnum develops an America tour with opera singer, Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson). While P.T. is traveling on tour with Lind, his family and coworkers are left to deal with those who hate the circus and all the abnormalities that it represents. Barnum will soon have to decide what kind of legacy he wants to leave behind and fight with his all to make that dream a reality.
This movie is a musical that rivals any top musical in songs, choreography, and set design. The songs are beautiful and incredibly catchy, easily carrying the viewer away in the magical story. The cast is a superb mix of actors and performers which when combined with the story line, provides a relatable character for almost every viewer. The most (and really only) disappointing part of this movie is the obviously over-digitization of Humphrey’s character; every aspect of the character is tainted by computer graphics. Several other scenery shots are obviously green screen sets, but it is done in a way that adds to the magic that Jackman’s Barnum sees in everything. Jackman does a brilliant job of leading The Greatest Showman into the hearts of movie-goers everywhere, just as Barnum led his circus to long-lasting, international fame.
