Ferdinand (John Cena) isn’t like the other calves and bulls: he doesn’t want to fight in the bullfighting ring.  One day, his father is selected to fight the matador and even though he is the strongest and bravest bull that Ferdinand knows, his father never returns from the fight.  In order to escape the same fate, young Ferdinand runs away from the ranch and finds a loving home with Nina (Lily Day) and her father.  Ferdinand is nothing if not kind-hearted, however he soon grows into a giant, powerful bull with a gentle heart.  Life is good until a few simple mistakes at a festival make Ferdinand seem like a dangerous bull and he is taken away from Lily and sent to a bullfighting ranch… the same one he ran away from years ago.  Upon his arrival, he is paired with Lupe (Kate McKinnon) the world’s most excited calming goat.  Ferdinand is also reconnected with some bulls from his calf-hood, all of whom are ready to take on the matador and dismissive of Ferdinand’s passive attitude.  Through every challenge, Ferdinand continues to try to help his fellow bulls see they have more choices than being a fighting or a meat bull.  When a bullfighter arrives to select a bull for a major fight, Ferdinand will have to decide what kind of bull he wants to be, both inside and outside of the bullfighting ring.

Based on The Story of Ferdinand book, this movie is simple, but effective.  The magic of computer animation allows the characters (like a 2,000-lb. bull) to be lovable, but more importantly it allows the humor of the voices to match the humor of the actions.  Cena and McKinnon are perfectly cast for their roles, both in respect to humor and to heart.  There are some moments that might be frightening to very young children, but overall it’s a fun movie that the young and young at heart can truly enjoy.  This movie’s appeal comes from its message that there is genuine strength to be found in standing for what you believe in.
