From Coco.
Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) is a boy whose only dream is to be just like his musician idol Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), unfortunately because his great, great grandfather left his family to pursue a career in music, his great, great grandmother Imelda banned all music from the family. While the rest of the family is dedicated to making the best shoes in all of Mexico, Miguel hides his love for music from them all, except his great grandmother Mama Coco because she is so old that she spends all day in a wheelchair waiting for her papa to come home. As the family prepares for the Day of the Dead (the one night a year where dead ancestors can leave the spirit world and visit their living family, as long as the living remember to place a picture up). Through a magical mix-up, Miguel is transported out of his world and into the Land of the Dead on the evening of the holiday. Soon after arriving, Miguel meets a clumsy skeleton named Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal) and several ancestors (including Mama Imelda [Alanna Ubach]), who is willing to send him home only if he gives up music. Miguel decides to head off with Hector on a search to find another ancestor who will give him a blessing so he can get home and keep playing music.
This movie is everything that a Pixar movie should be: it is genuine, captivating, and fun for viewers of all ages. The animators did a fantastic job at creating what could easily be terrifying characters (dead, skinless skeletons) into sweet and endearing characters, so that anyone but the youngest of viewers would have no issue. The story is bright and fun, despite the main setting being the Land of the Dead; it highlights family as a very important foundation for life. The story and dialog are simple enough for children to understand and deep enough for adult to stay entertained. A captivating story from start to finish.
