From The Star.
Instead of following the people of the Nativity story, this movie follows the real heroes… the animals. Bo the Donkey (Stephen Yeun) leads the wild array of characters boasting the voice acting skills of a powerful group including Keegan-Michael Key, Aidy Bryant, Patricia Heaton, Kelly Clarkson, Oprah Winfrey, Kristin Chenoweth, and Mariah Carey (just to name a few). Bo is a mill donkey that dreams of leaving the mill far behind to join a royal caravan; he just needs to escape and then he can be part of something important. During his daring escape, Bo injures his leg and seeks shelter with a young couple named Joseph and Mary (Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez). Since he’s stuck until his leg heals, Bo starts to get attached to Mary and Joseph, but he still plans to run away as soon as he’s healed. Three camels (and their wisemen owners) follow a new star in the sky and the new king they believe will be found under the star; they visit King Herod (Christopher Plummer) for help, but Herod makes plans to kill the new king… if he can only find him. Mary and Joseph have begun their journey to Bethlehem without Bo, but now the little donkey will have to find and warn them before Herod’s henchman/henchdogs can find them, and Bo’s going to need all sorts of furry help to succeed.
This is the story of Christmas like you’ve never seen it before; the movie is entertaining for children and adults, regardless of how familiar you are with the Nativity story. The story is easy to follow with action and comedic moments blended together to create a captivating movie. The background action is funny and rich, which adds a layer of entertainment for older viewers. The story line is true to the original story, but retold in a way that makes it very easy for young viewers to follow and comprehend. It is the perfect Christmas movie for the whole family to enjoy!
